We are well aware of the disadvantages of being dependent on funding from outside sources and for that reason we are doing all we can to set up various income generating projects on site to ensure that in case of any eventualities, we can be able to operate within the income locally raised. Our UK team is working hard towards our goal to become self funding. Although the projects so far created are still in infantry stage, we hope to be successful in the near future especially when we overcome the marketing challenge as at the moment we’re lacking skilled marketers for our products.
So far, these are some of the projects up and running;
Poultry
We have a four roomed building in which we are able to rear up to 500 chickens in each room. We rear chickens for both meat and eggs. We also rear free range turkeys. It costs about £300 to purchase 500 chicks, vaccines and feeds for 8 weeks and if all goes well, we start selling them from the 8th week. For £100 we can purchase 150 chicks, vaccines and feeds and realise a profit of about £80.
Mushrooms
We grow organic oyster mushrooms both for food and for sale. £50 can enable us to plant 60 gardens of mushrooms.
Bakery
We have set up a bakery but due lack of electricity at the home, we are unable to use the mixer we bought as it s too powerful to operate on our generator and at the moment we
only produce doughnuts. We are seeking to raise about £1,100 to enable us to install electricity in order for the bakery to be fully operational. Once electricity is installed, we shall be able to produce bread, cakes etc for sale.
Tailoring
We have 2 sowing machines so far and they are being used to train the children at the moment. We have 2 electric sowing machines waiting to be sent to Uganda but these
can’t be used until electricity is installed. Manual sowing machines costs about £40 each in Uganda.
Tree nursery
We started up a tree nursery in April 2007, we now have over 10,000 trees ready for sale. We would have sold them off by now but the dry season has caused us delays.
Once it starts raining, we shall be able raise a good income from these trees.
Bridal project
“Brides Together”
The UK team has a range of bridal wear to be hired out to enable us raise funds and a catalogue will be out soon. We still need more bridal items and request anyone with bridal wear for men and women, boys and girls to donate them to us. We will send some of them to Uganda to enable us start up the “Brides Together” project in Jinja for the same purpose. If you have any bridal item you might wish to donate to us, please e-mail Yvonne at

Future projects
The Catering
project
Its cultural practice for Ugandans to serve food at all functions and there is a growing demand for caterers. We are looking for funds to enable us start up a catering project from which we can generate funds to enable us purchase material required for training widows. In order for us to purchase catering equipment, cutlery, etc, we would require about £400 to get started.
Carpentry
When funds become available, we would like to start up a carpentry workshop project which will provide more training skills for the children (especially boys) and widows and it will be a good source of income as there are very few wood workshops in Jinja and there is demand for wood works.
Road side kiosk
We have plans to set up a local road side kiosk in the very near future to enable us sell more of our produce as well as advertise them. We will need money for putting up a stall and also pay a monthly charge to the local council.
It is our desire to become self funding and we are creating various mini projects to enable us equip our beneficiaries with saleable skill as well as raise funds locally. Every little helps and great things are made out of small things. If you would like to get involved in making a difference in orphan’s and widow’s lives, here is a list of some of our requirements and projects that you can fund in order to help.
